Mass Ascension Pics

There were plenty of crew members today so Mike and I opted to stay on the field again. So much to see and do! It was a wonderful day for pictures, the sky was the beautiful blue that you only see in New Mexico and there were so many balloons in the sky I didn't know which way to turn! This page has pictures of lots of balloons, on the next page I've placed all the individual balloon pics. For the most part they're in sequence but for "artistic" purposes some are obviously out of order. Enjoy!
10-9-02-2-0a The balloon with the streamers is called "Tickler Too", the tie-dye balloon just behind it is "Gloria Caeli". I'm pretty proud of how pretty this picture turned out!

The Mass ascension today was called "Flight of the Nations". The first wave of balloons taking off were all flying their national flag. You can see various flags on the crown line these guys are holding (not sure what their actual affiliation was). 22 different countries were represented at the Fiesta this year. Unfortunately, due to 9/11, prices to ship balloons internationally have risen dramatically which reduced the number of international participants. Even so the "Flight of the Nations" was quite impressive!

The green balloon with shamrocks is named "Irish Rover".

The blue balloon with the kernel of corn on it is named, appropriately enough, "Corn". I'm guessing it was so designed to celebrate the role of corn in the Iowa economy. The pilot's name is Dennis Leroy Anderson from Ames, Iowa.

(balloons from left to right) Rude Awakening (green top, pink and black stripes), Asendin (yellow with turquoise/red diagonal), Corn, Hearts A'Fire (pink w/hearts) Son of Ding (yellow, green, blue - just rising), Dingbat (yellow, green & blue). (Click on the picture for a mini-window popup with a full diagram of which balloon is which.)

This picture turned out so pretty, the colors couldn't be more vivid!! Look close at the large balloon at the bottom. Notice anything odd about the basket? There isn't one!! This balloon is called "Mini-Me" and it only seats one!
