Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Day 7
Friday October 11, 2002

We launched off field again today, but this time it was a little different as we set up and took off out of the back yard of a friend of Jonathan's. We were a little short handed for crew today so I wasn't able to pull out the camera until the balloon was taking off. Today was Roland and Steve's last day, they were both leaving tomorrow.

And away they go!

10-11-02-1-11 Besides Jonathan's balloon, Gloria Caeli, we shared the spot with another balloon named Paper Balloon. She was put together in 1970, one of the very first tie-died balloons ever! I was really taken with how pretty she is. Her pilot and owner is Greg Winker who's also one of the gas balloon pilots that participated in "America's Challenge Gas Balloon race". He didn't have this balloon entered in the Fiesta so it was a real privelege to be able to see her!

The light was so perfect this morning!

And there they go!

Polar Son peaking over the tree.

Cool shot of all three balloons.

And away they all go. Today's chase was the best yet. Except for us losing the balloon for a spell, turns out that Rick was down by the river and we couldn't see him because of all the trees!

Heading for the river...

Playing on the Rio Grande!

There wasn't much water in the river, but what was there gave a beautiful reflection.

Looking East, there's a whole lot of balloons in the sky!

Rick landed the balloon in another backyard, this time the house belonged to a pilot from American Airlines. Clockwise from upper left: Michael, Rick, Roland, me, James (home owner's son), Steve, and Rob (home owner).

Rob was such a nice man, he and his son helped up get the balloon put away then invited us to relax by his pool. We brought the champagne and he provided chips and salsa! Great day!!

Back at the balloon field, a look down merchant's row.

Looking the other direction.

The "official" souvenir tent. The red arch with balloons on it was over the entrance from the bus stop.

The white tents were set up for various special parties. One of them is the media tent, another was the pilot hospitality tent.
10-11-02-3-09

This shot was taken just before dusk tonight. There was supposed to be a balloon glow but the winds were just too strong. This is the entrance from the main parking lot. Look at those flags!

Wells Fargo wasn't going to let a little wind stop them from getting their balloons up! They didn't stay up long though, the winds were just too fierce.
10-11-02-3-17

Purple People Eater trying to inflate. They weren't successful. I think they gave up about halfway through inflation.
10-11-02-3-11

The Fiesta committee finally called off the balloon glow, holding instead what is called a "candle glow" where the balloons just light off their burners without the actual envelope. Didn't sound very exciting to us so we went home.
Continue on for Saturday's pictures...
